Commonly-used techniques to estimate vegetation cover (e.g. point height intercept) are time-consuming and can be especially subjective in tall forest environments. We investigated the application of a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) to quantify forest structure, in terms of evenness and functional diversity. We also explored the suitability of the developed lasergrammetric technique (LGT) in the monitoring of nest site preferences of translocated populations of New Zealand endemic birds, the South Island saddleback (Philesturnus carunculatus) and the New Zealand robin (Petroica australis). At an acquisition rate of up to 6000 points per second and with an estimated error of less than 2 cm, the LGT technique utilises terrestrial scanners that allow collection and processing of field data rapidly and precisely. Further, LGT is able to account for small structural elements such as minor branches, leaves and vine stems. The derived measures (mean height of canopy (MCH), indices of structural evenness (E var) and functional diversity (FD var)) can quantified vertical variations in vegetation density but appeared highly dependent on the vertical scale of measurement. When applied to an ecological case study, results suggested that the LGT method provides complementary quantitative estimates to summary methods when assessing vegetation structure for micro-scale studies. However, further validations of the LGT accuracy are needed more specifically in relation to density of obstructing vegetation and when used in the measuring of small vegetative objects and total biomass estimates. The development of new software packages that easily convert large amounts of three-dimensional data collected using laser scanners, into a form ready for biostatistical analysis, also is strongly encouraged.

Mangrove vegetation and community structure of brachyuran crabs as ecological indicators of Pondicherry coast, South east coast of India

Baseline ecological studies of Pondicherry mangroves are important for monitoring, management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems. A brachyuran crab faunal assemblage at four stations of Pondicherry mangroves is described and monthly samplings were made during September 2008 – August 2009. Totally 22 species of brachyuran crabs belonging to 12 genera and 5 families were recorded crabs bel...

Application of Ecological Theory to Management of Arid Drylands: An Example from China

Rangeland ecosystems shift across dynamic thresholds between differentecological states in response to natural or human-induced factors. These differentecological states are the result of interactions among climate, soils, grazing history, and management practices. The notion of a single ‘‘pristine’’ final state is onlyconceptual in nature, and because of this, dynamic thresholds and the effects...

Evaluating the Success of Fine Dust Hotspots Control Projects Using Structural and Functional Characteristics of the Habitat in the West Shore of Urmia Lake

Introduction: As one of the most serious environmental challenges of Iran during the recent decade, the phenomenon of fine dust has occurred due to improper and excessive ecologic use of rangeland ecosystems, drought, and mismanagement of water resources. Knowing this phenomenon and being aware of the required strategies to fight against it play an essential role in reducing the number of dust ...

Multivariate Statistical Method for Assessing Livestock Grazing Effects on Soil and Vegetation in Steppe Rangelands (Case Study: Steppe Rangelands of Saveh)

This study aims to assess the effect of grazing intensity on vegetation structure, soil nutrient concentrations and soil physical properties. The study was carried out in steppe rangelands of Saveh, Markazi province, Iran. Four sites with four grazing intensities including very high, high, moderate and non-grazed with the same ecological conditions were selected. To study various vegetation and...
